The severity of a persisting or newly arising mental disorder may be heightened by the stresses associated with growing old, and, therefore, may require more therapeutic attention than younger adults. Diminishing self esteem, coping with many losses, and realization of death’s proximity are common factors that may heighten a geriatric patient’s need to process with IPT and/or CBT. Another factor that may contribute greatly to an older adult’s likelihood to require psychotherapy is whether or not they are home-bound. Home-bound seniors are two to three times more likely to develop Major Depressive Disorder; however, it has been found that the troubling symptoms related to Major Depressive Disorder can be alleviated through the implementation of CBT, problem-solving therapy, and interpersonal psychotherapy, in tandem with medication.

It has been found that IPT for both the in and out-patient geriatric community is extremely effective in quelling dangerous behaviors associated with mental illness, such as suicide ideation and other self injuroud symptoms. CBT is more geared toward geriatric patients who are cognitively aware and are struggling with hardships such as grief and life transitions. CBT has also been proven to be the superior course of treatment for late-life depression and negative thoughts associated with later disorders. CBT may work similarly to alleviate looming symptoms of various anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and sleep disorders.
